CL&P wants 4.6 percent rate hike

Connecticut Light & Power is seeking a 4.6 percent increase in electricity rates it charges customers as of next January.
The increase would add between $5.50 and $7.00 to residents”™ monthly bills, resulting in $189 million in additional revenue for CL&P.
CL&P indicated the increase is necessary to cover higher costs, including the cost of transformers and maintenance operations such as pruning tree branches near electrical cables.
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal issued a statement saying he would fight the proposed increase.
CL&P is based in Berlin, Conn., and parent company Northeast Utilities has its headquarters in Springfield, Mass.
In 2006, Northeast Utilities had a $471 million profit on $6.9 billion in revenue.
