Stamford Academy charter school to close in 2020

Having weathered the closing of one of its charter schools over the summer, Stamford will say goodbye to its remaining one at the end of the current school year.

Stamford Academy, which serves about 150 students, said that a number of financial factors played into its decision to close after 15 years. While the school received $644,000 from the Stamford Public Schools district for the 2018-19 school year, it stands to receive $594,000 for 2019-20.

“Stamford Academy does not anticipate having the funding to operate beyond the end of this school year,” the school said in a letter sent to parents. Pending possible snow days, the last day of school is June 12.

The school is operated by Stamford nonprofit Domus, which in July announced it was closing its other charter school in the city, Trailblazers Academy, before the current school year began. Financial difficulties were also cited in that instance.

With the closing of Stamford Academy, Fairfield County will be left with seven charter schools: six in Bridgeport and one in Norwalk. Another, Danbury Prospect Charter School, is expected to open in the fall of 2020.
