Stop & Shop will lay off 239 workers in Mount Vernon

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. L.L.C. has notified state officials the grocery store chain will lay off 239 workers when it closes its Mount Vernon warehouse in September.

The warehouse operation is attached to the Stop & Shop grocery store at 240 E. Sandford Blvd. in Mount Vernon. The grocery will remain open, said Arlene Putterman, spokeswoman at the Stop & Shop New York Metro Division office in Purchase.

Putterman said the Massachusetts-based company will close six “warerooms” attached to Stop & Shop stores in the metropolitan area. They will be replaced by the company”™s approximately 300,000-square-foot fulfillment center that is scheduled to open in July in Jersey City, N.J., she said.

Putterman said the official closing date in Mount Vernon  is Sept. 21.

“Our goal is to place as many associates as possible into other positions” within the company, she said. Company representatives  are working with the United Food and Commercial Workers union to find placements for its members facing layoffs in Mount Vernon.
