New York, CT see higher volume of outbound relocations

For the second year in the row, New York and Connecticut have been named among the states where more people are moving out rather than moving in.

According to United Van Lines”™ 40th Annual National Movers Study, New York and Connecticut placed third and fourth among the top states with the greatest level of outbound relocations; New Jersey and Illinois snagged first and second slots on this list. In comparison, South Dakota, Vermont and Oregon were dubbed the top states for inbound relocations.

Professor Michael Stoll, chairman of the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, credited a new migration of retirees for this year”™s data. “We are seeing more retirees than ever decide to relocate, and as a result, new retirement hubs are popping up in western states,” he said. “Interestingly enough, these retirees are leaving at such a fast pace that the movement of millennials to urban areas in the Midwest and Northeast is being overshadowed.”
