I-95 in Stamford, New York Metro, among worst in country for traffic
I-95 in Stamford is among the most congested roadways in the country, according to the latest study by INRIX Inc, a mobility solutions research firm based in Washington state.
Stamford’s ignominious ranking was followed closely by New York’s I-278. Only Orlando and LA had stretches of road that eclipse the congestion seen in those locations. New York City drivers in 2023 had on average 101 hours spent in traffic every year, which ranked it the single most congested major city in the world.
During 2023 Americans on average spent 42 hours a year sitting in traffic, an 11 percent increase over 2022 and costing the economy more than $700 per driver in lost economic activity.
“Traffic congestion is both a bane and a barometer of economic health; it symbolizes bustling activity yet simultaneously hampers it,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Reflecting on 2023 and early 2024, the surge in traffic congestion in urban areas indicated a revival of economic hubbub post-COVID, but it also led to billions of dollars in lost time for drivers.” Despite signs of recovery, though, some aspects of the pandemic are sticking around. Pishue continued, “Although congestion is returning to pre-COVID levels, we’re seeing interesting changes in congestion patterns due to the lingering effects of the pandemic. The continuation of hybrid and remote work is creating new travel peaks from what we’ve seen previously.”
