City opens site design to public
The city of New Rochelle has launched a public design competition to guide redevelopment at the site of the city”™s former naval armory at Echo Bay on Long Island Sound.
The Waterfront Gateway Design Competition seeks “creative and innovative” proposals for the design, planning, and re-imaging of the nearly 3-acre site on Route 1. City officials said the winning proposal will be selected by a high-profile jury of architects, planners, and public officials and is expected to be the basis for the development of the site.
“We believe this is the most important competition to take place in Westchester County in many years,” New Rochelle Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon said in a press release. “We look forward to receiving unique and innovative proposals that will activate this currently underutilized site while honoring its heritage.”
The New Rochelle City Council last year chose a proposal from Good Profit, a nonprofit group. to redevelop the 82-year-old armory as a food market and restaurant space. Â Military veterans in the city protested the city”™s rejection of a veterans group”™s proposal to convert the vacant armory to a performing arts center.
The city was left without a site developer when Good Profit earlier this year failed to make a required payment to the city as part of the agreement.
Online registration closes Aug. 5. The winner will be announced Dec. 11.
