Multiple fatalities at Newtown elementary school shooting

Students and staff are among the deceased following a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, State Police Lt. Paul Vance told reporters.

The scene has been secured, police said, with dozens of local, state and federal law enforcement officials on-site.

Vance said there were “several” fatalities, including a gunman, who was found by police inside the school. Vance said more information would be made available following the notification of family members of those affected.

According to police, at least one gunman entered the school at around 9:30 a.m. The Associated Press has reported that more than two-dozen people, including as many as 18 children, were killed in the shooting.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is at the scene, and President Obama is expected to address the nation later today.
