Newtown contractor sentenced to six months for tax evasion

Thomas R. Saint, the owner of Tom Saint Painting and Remodeling LLC in Newtown, was sentenced to six months in prison and one year of supervised release for tax evasion.

According to the charges brought against him, Saint attempted to evade the assessment of federal taxes between 2013 and 2019 by cashing business checks instead of depositing them into his business”™s bank account, depositing cash and business checks into his personal bank account and failing to inform his tax preparer of this conduct. As a result of his actions, Saint failed to report a total of $2,163,645 in gross receipts, resulting in a tax loss to the government of $791,500.

On Feb. 22, Saint pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion. He paid restitution of $791,500 and has agreed to cooperate with the IRS to pay interest and penalties.

Saint, who is released on a $100,000 bond, is required to report to prison on Aug. 4.
