Pomona man accused of concealing $1M from IRS

A Rockland man has been indicted for allegedly understating business income by more than $1 million.

A federal grand jury charged Michael Maroff, of Pomana, with six counts of aiding and assisting the preparation of false and fraudulent tax returns, Jan. 3. in U.S. District Court, White Plains.

Maroff operates General Home Systems Corp., Tallman, a fire, flooding and mold restoration contractor he founded with his father, Irv Maroff, in 1986, and Monroe Commercial Properties LLC, a real estate management company in Pomona founded in 2008.

His business income should have been reported on corporate tax returns, the indictment states, and then transferred to his personal returns and assessed for taxes.

Instead, from 2017 through 2019 Maroff allegedly diverted and concealed business income by directing customers and tenants to write checks to him personally.

Then he kept the cash for his personal use and understated gross receipts for the businesses, the indictment states.

Receipts for General Home Systems were understated by $868,375 over a three year period, according to the indictment, and for Monroe Commercial Properties by $178,279, for a total of $1,046,654.

The indictment does not say how much more Maroff should have paid in federal taxes.

Maroff did not immediately reply to an email asking for his side of the story.
