“It”™s a great project and one we obviously support,” said Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy. “As far as we can determine, this project is going to be the highest level of architectural and environmental achievement in our part of the state.”

The plan for a 17-story building off Atlantic Street on the city”™s south end was approved with a unanimous vote by zoning board members.

“As far as transit-oriented development is concerned, there is no better example than this project,” said Robin Stein, chief of Stamford”™s Land Use Bureau. “It’s mixed use, mixed income, and it’s green.”

Metro Green includes an affordable housing complex also being publicized as an environmentally conscious endeavor.

Partnering in the Metro Green project are W&M Industries and Jonathan Rose Cos. L.L.C.

According to Anthony Malkin, president of W&M Industries, the project is scheduled to break ground in the next year.

According to Stein, the companies involved are shooting for the top level environmental standards in the state.

“The only way it could be more transit-oriented was if it was inside the train station,” said Stein,

who said he and other city officials have advocated for high-density, energy-efficient housing for a long time.

Malkin said the companies and the final plan benefitted greatly from the collaborative effort of the public and private sectors.

“Stamford gets it and understands the importance of intelligent growth and realizes this is the direction we need to go,” said Malkin.

In June, Jonathan Rose Cos. broke ground on Henry Street for the construction of Metro Green Apartments, marking the start of the first stage of the project. The 50 buildings of environmentally responsive affordable housing will have a total of 238 units of mixed-income rental and for-sale residences.

“Stamford continues to prove itself as able to get buildings with great design principles into the ground in a cooperative fashion,” said Malloy.

Opposition to the plan came in the form of a competing developer who objected to the site plan, raising issues of potential flood hazards as well as possible traffic congestion.
