Housing developer breaks ground in Yonkers

Developers at The Community Builders Inc. will join this afternoon with Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and city housing officials to break ground on a $62.9 million housing development on the site of the city”™s former Public School 6 at 33 Ashburton Ave.

Schoolhouse Terrace at Croton Heights will add 121 apartments for tenants with a range of incomes to the city”™s stock of affordable housing. It includes a 51-unit building for seniors, a 70-unit building for families and 134 parking spaces. A city spokesman said the complex is designed for energy efficiency.

The project is slated for completion in April 2015.

Abandoned for more than 30 years, Public School 6 fell into a state of disrepair that ruled out preservation of the building by the developer.  The school”™s historic entry arch, though, will be incorporated into the housing construction.

The project is a collaborative effort between The Community Builders, a 59-year-old nonprofit development company headquartered in Chicago, and the city’s Municipal Housing Authority.
