Latimer launches campaign for Congress

After having filed papers declaring his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, Westchester County Executive George Latimer today formally announced the start of his campaign to unseat Rep. Jamaal Bowman from New York’s 16th Congressional District. Latimer did not hold an in-person formal event for the announcement. He is taking on Bowman in a Democratic Party primary with the intention of capturing the party’s nomination to run for the seat in the 2024 election.

Latimer’s campaign committee issued the announcement accompanied by a video that highlighted Latimer’s career in public life. In the video, Latimer slammed Bowman for putting “personal politics ahead of progress.” Latimer also blasted Donald Trump for being “dark and divisive.” House Speaker Mike Johnson also came in for criticism for wanting to gut social security, ban abortion nationwide and promoting a host of other right-wing policies.

“Our country is facing an existential crisis and our very democracy is at risk right now,” said Latimer. “We need our voice in Congress to be someone who brings people together and delivers results on the issues that matter.”

Latimer said that people need a representative on Capitol Hill who will listen to all voices, not just those that agree with him, and who takes concerns of constituents seriously.

“It’s time for Washington to stop bickering and start working for us,” Latimer said.
