I-95 Reopened ahead of schedule

On Thursday last week, May 2, a tanker truck caught fire beneath the Fairfield Avenue Bridge in Norwalk, which passes over Interstate 95. Demolition began on Friday, May 3 as soon as crews from Yonkers Construction arrived on the scene, shortly after an inspection of the bridge revealed it would need to be removed.

By Sunday morning, ahead of schedule and before the arrival of rain which could have delayed repaving operations, I-95 was open in both directions. The news was welcomed by both travelers through the region who were either crowded onto other routes such as the Merritt Parkway and Norwalk locals who dealt with paralyzing traffic jams throughout the ordeal that prompted the closure of schools on Friday.

While all lanes are currently open, more construction will occur in the future. The Fairfield Avenue Bridge, less than 10 years old, is expected to be replaced, however the highly built-up area immediately around it will prevent the use of “Advanced Bridge Construction” techniques that allow for rapid bridge installation, since those require large staging grounds.

For the time being, traffic flows freely once again on one of the region’s most important highways.
