Fire department showcase at Cross County Center

Fire departments from Hartsdale, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Pelham, White Plains, Arlington, Danbury, Greenwich and Fairfield took part in the City of Yonkers Fire Department’s first Urban Search and Rescue Showcase at the Cross County Center. Nearly 50 City of Yonkers firefighters participated.

Yonkers firefighters demonstrated rescue techniques used to extricate people from vehicles and buildings. The showcase also included discussions of procedures during hazardous material events and intricate water rescues.

“This is a great way for our fire department to examine and strengthen their capabilities in the event of a major emergency response,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “We have always supported and provided resources for our fire department to have the best equipment and training. This showcase allows them to connect with other mutual aid companies so we can all help each other when called upon.”

Yonkers Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick noted, “This was an excellent opportunity to build upon our relationships in the region. The primary goal of this event was to foster collaboration, demonstrate equipment and capabilities, and discuss strategies for emergency response and we did just that.”

Carl Calabro, a senior manager at Cross County Center, said that the center was happy to provide space for the event.

“Shopper safety is always our top priority, so when we were approached about using our garage and North Lot for this important showcase, we were thrilled to say yes,” Calabro said.
