Eye on Small Business: Wow Building Maintenance Solutions, White Plains
If anyone knows the meaning of cleaning, it’s Christian Espinoza, president and CEO of WOW! Building Maintenance Solutions, a leader in the commercial cleaning industry in Westchester and the surrounding counties.
Arriving from Ecuador age 12 to pursue the American Dream, Espinoza founded the company in his parents’ Yonkers basement in 2005. In a recent interview, he told the Westfair Business Journal he had had a clear mission when he started up, namely to elevate the commercial cleaning industry through outstanding service and integrity, and what he calls “a people-first approach.” The goal, he said, was to build a company that would not only serve its clients “with excellence” but also create opportunities for employees to grow and thrive.
Although he is too polite to say so bluntly, Espinoza had seen firsthand how much mediocrity there was in the industry and sensed there would be a demand for a cleaning company that prioritized professionalism, responsiveness and quality.
At its inception, the company offered only commercial cleaning services but has since expanded into specialized services such as deep sanitization, facility maintenance and day-porter staffing. Core services include commercial cleaning, janitorial maintenance and post-construction cleaning.
Technology has played “a huge role” in the firm’s evolution. Espinoza said that leveraging tools like Swept (a provider of janitorial software) for workforce management and Fleetmatics (a fleet management and operations platform) for vehicle tracking has helped Wow! maintain high standards and all-round efficiency.
Asked about some of the more demanding services and how Wow! deals with them, Espinoza singled out post-construction cleaning. He explained that this can be one of the most challenging areas, owing to tight turnaround times and the kind of detail required.
Wow!’s security services division, meanwhile, has developed organically, Espinoza said, through strong relationships with property managers who trusted the company to handle more than just cleaning. He explained how part of Wow!’s vision was to be a one-source provider for all facility needs. Expanding into security services offered “a seamless, integrated solution.”
By combining janitorial and security services under one trusted provider, Wow! helps clients streamline operations, enhance safety and improve efficiency. The team follows strict security protocols, including access control, key management and real-time workforce tracking, ensuring a safe and well-maintained environment for all.
On the question of being a family and minority-owned business, Espinoza mentioned trust and shared vision among the leadership as being key advantages . As a minority-owned business, he described “resilience and community support” as being sustaining factors, as well as the willingness to support individuals seeking career growth in an industry that often overlooks talent potential.
As for whether family businesses are a good model generally, especially in today’s staffing climate, Espinoza believes they absolutely are.
“Family businesses foster loyalty, personalized service, consistency and a sense of purpose that is often missing in corporate environments. And in an era where high turnover is a challenge, our culture of care and growth has helped us retain top talent and build a strong, reliable team.”
