Bessemer to open Greenwich office

Bessemer Trust Co. N.A. plans to establish a limited branch in Greenwich, its first in Connecticut.

The company plans to take space at 600 Steamboat Rd. in Greenwich, in the first lease deal revealed for the former RBS Greenwich Capital headquarters building since it underwent an extensive overhaul in the past year.

Bessemer Trust is based in New York City and oversees more than $65 billion in assets. Bloomberg Markets recently rated Bessemer fourth on a ranking of money managers for wealthy families, behind only HSBC Private Bank, Northern Trust Corp. and BNY Mellon Wealth Management. Northern Trust and BNY Mellon both have Greenwich offices.

Bessemer traces its history to 1907, when Henry Phipps formed it as his family’s office to manage the proceeds from the sale of Carnegie Steel, which he founded with Andrew Carnegie. The name Bessemer stems from Sir Henry Bessemer, the inventor of the steel making process that was instrumental in the success of Carnegie Steel.
