Storm’s aftermath may help casino expansion
Hurricane Sandy could help the movement to expand casino gambling in New York state. The economic losses resulting from the storm have opened the door, according to proponents who claim gambling could give the state a much needed economic boost.
New York lawmakers are poised to consider an amendment to the state constitution on gambling in the new year. The state has appealed to Congress to get a $42 billion relief package to help recovery efforts. Also, New York has continued to feel the lingering effects of the down economy.
All that sets a tone, according to Sen. John J. Bonacic, chairman of the Senate Committee on Racing, Wagering and Gaming. Bonacic reportedly said he thinks lawmakers may now be willing to approve an amendment next year, although there is some uncertainty over how New Yorkers will vote.
