Report: Conn. queries WWE on contractors
The state of Connecticut reportedly is investigating whether World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. improperly classifies its performers as independent contractors.
A common employment arrangement in both the sports and entertainment industry, the use of independent contractors has come under government scrutiny of late as a ploy by companies in a broad range of industries to avoid paying employee taxes and benefits.
WWE confirmed an investigation to the Stamford Advocate, which reported the company was sued three years ago by wrestlers making similar claims. Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon is running for the U.S. Senate.
In a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, WWE indicated its wrestling contracts typically last from one to four years.
