Broadway theater renamed for James Earl Jones

Broadway’s 110-year-old Cort Theatre has been renamed The James Earl Jones Theatre during a dedication service in Manhattan on Monday.

The Shubert Organization, which owns the theater, first announced its plans to rename the Cort in March. The venue recently underwent a $47 million renovation and expansion project.

The 91-year-old Jones did not attend the dedication ceremony, but according to a Deadline report he was given a private tour of the venue on Sept. 8. During his career, Jones has won three Tony Awards and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. He also won two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, the National Medal of the Arts, the Kennedy Center Honor and an Honorary Academy Award.
