ArtsWestchester announces 2015 gala honorees

As part of its 2015 50th anniversary annual gala, ArtsWestchseter said it will honor 19 former and current presidents who have served the nonprofit arts council over its 50 years of operation.

The 50th anniversary gala will be held Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Westchester in White Plains.

The honorees include: current president Froma Benerofe; Jacqueline A. Walker (2012-2014); Joseph Oates (2010-2012); Stephen K. Dishart (2009-2010); John Peckham (2005-2009); Jamie Shenkman (2002-2005); LaRuth Gray (2001-2002); A. Maren Hexter (1997-2000); Betty Himmel (1995-1997); Kenneth J. Gould (1992-1995); Francis G. Ronnenberg (1990-1992); Timothy J. Curtin (1987-1990); Dorothy Swegel (1985-1987); Daniel Idzik (1983-1985); Katherine Niles (1977-1983); William J. Bridenbecker (1975-1976); A. Corwin Frost (1974-1975); Polly Siwek (1969-1973); and founding president George Newlin (1966-1969).

“I’m thrilled at how … ArtsWestchester has survived and made an impact for nearly five decades so far,” Newlin said.

The organization said it has invested more than $35 million in arts and cultural programs throughout the county and supported more than 1,300 artists and cultural institutions.

Founded in 1965, ArtsWestchester provides programs and services expanding arts in the county, including funding for concerts and plays and bringing artists into schools and community centers.

ArtsWestchester CEO Janet T. Langsam said the work of the organization’s presidents has led it to become a mainstay in the county arts community.

“Westchester County is a more vibrant place because of the hard work, dedication and leadership of these devoted individuals,” Langsam said. “The work of these board presidents has grown the cultural industry to an economic impact of more than $156 million. They deserve this tribute.”
