Elizabeth M. Pfriem, a Bridgeport-based newspaper publisher and philanthropist, died at her Southport home on Saturday at the age of 92.
Pfriem succeeded her husband, John Pfriem, as the president and CEO of the Bridgeport Post and Telegram in 1983. Five years later, she sold the company to Thomson Corp., which renamed the Bridgeport Post as the Connecticut Post, which was later sold to Hearst Connecticut Media; the Bridgeport Telegram ceased publication in 1990.
Pfriem’s philanthropic outreach involved support of Bridgeport-area medical facilities. The Elizabeth M. Pfriem Pediatric Emergency Center at Bridgeport Hospital and the Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center were named in her honor, and she was also a supporter of the Visiting Nurse Service of Connecticut, Operation Hope.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on April 8 in the United Congregational Church, 877 Park Ave. in Bridgeport.
