Danbury embraces New Year’s Eve

Forget the boozy shenanigans.

It will be chilly – perhaps in the low 20s – but dozens of entertainers, craftspersons and even ice skaters are scheduled to perform and display their wares New Year’s Eve during the Danbury’s 24th annual First Night happening.

This year’s event incorporates a throwback to vaudeville acts competing for attention with local rockers Marmalade Sky.

The vaudeville acts take place at the Palace Theatre and will be headlined by Kenny Wilson and Leroy Cool, who have performed with Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfield and Rosie O’Donnell.

The Easton Banjo Society plays the theater, too.

The Whalers ice hockey team will hold workshops in the Danbury Ice Arena. The Mad Hatters Barbershop Chorus will perform along with the New Hope Mass Choir at St. James Church on West Street.

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend all the events.

Entry buttons for the event cost $10 each and can be purchased at CityCenter and at the Danbury Library, at the corner of Main and West streets, and at the ice arena off Patriot Drive.
