Wilton project gets funding boost
Wilton Commons Inc. and the Mutual Housing Association of Southwestern Connecticut were approved for more than $7 million by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority and Department of Economic and Community Development.
A senior living development project, Wilton Commons”™ first phase, a 51-unit senior community, will cost $9.6 million and is being funded with the $7 million secured in state funding and the $2 million raised from more than 100 contributors by Wilton Commons under the leadership of Buck Griswold.
The state funding, consisting of Low Income Housing Tax Credits, low-cost mortgage loans and grants, was awarded following meetings between the two agencies and Wilton Commons board members and local legislators.
In addition to securing funding, Wilton Commons Inc. will enter into an 85-year lease agreement with the Town of Wilton, securing a 4.8-acre parcel of land just north of the Wilton Teen Center for $1 per year, a commitment valued at over $2 million.
Working with MHA, Wilton Commons is expected to break ground in the summer and will be ready for occupancy by 2013. Wilton Commons will offer one-bedroom apartments and amenities such as on-site staff, social events and activities, and handicapped accessibility throughout the building. Additional services including light housekeeping and meals are also planned. The developers said a second phase of 20-25 units will be completed when funding becomes available.
