Proctor”™s Theater in Yonkers has been recommended for listing on the state and national registers of historic places.
The 2,300-seat theater and six-story office building that was built in 1916 was among 33 sites recommended by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation. The theater was the grand vision of theater magnate Frederick Francis Proctor and designed by architect William E. Lehman. The building, across from City Hall, today houses the Emerald Diner.
“Residents would like to see performing space resurrected,” City Council President Chuck Lesnick said. “If we can rehab this old space it would be much more authentic.”
The rear exit of the theater backs up to a city-owned parking lot, which is behind the Roosevelt Ballroom.
“If there was a way to link the two of those into a real performing arts center for downtown Yonkers that would really have a lot of substance,” Lesnick said.
