Recovery costs exceed $30M for Westchester parks

Playland Hurricane Sandy boardwalk

The boardwalk at Rye Playland suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy.

In Westchester County damage to area parks caused Hurricane Sandy amounted to around $30 million.

According to Parks Commissioner Kathleen O’Connor, Rye Playland amusement park in particular took a huge hit from the storm with damage totaling $12 million. O’Connor told the Board of Legislators this week the amusement park’s boardwalk was all but erased from the landscape.

Ice skaters and hockey players who typically enjoy the park’s Ice Casino have to find alternatives because the facility remains closed. That arena sustained damaged to the roof and its boiler. Officials are still waiting on a final financial assessment of the damage so that they can move forward with the repair.
